Yet another study has revealed the extent of the gender divide within mainstream media organisations. The Women’s Media Center report focuses on news, including the most popular mainstream American media outlets.
Examining the bylines of 27,758 bylines from 2014 WMC found that women generated only 37.3 percent of news. In broadcast news, men were on camera 68 percent of the time, and on the wires, men wrote 62 percent of the content.
What’s baffling is that you would think news is a fairly universal issue. The news-reading population should be a reflection of the population, so why is it being delivered by a predominantly biased representation of society? Is it any wonder there is such a poor representation of women in the media, when that media is being created by men?
